Here's how an engine works to power your car. In this video, a 1ZZ-FE engine from a Toyota Corolla is taken apart to show what is inside and how it works. It first starts with an overview of major engine components, how it works, then goes into the disassembly of the engine, followed by a detailed breakdown of the individual components themselves. The internal combustion engine makes power from the explosion of gasoline in a cylinder. The piston in the cylinder will slide down, pushing a connecting rod around the crankshaft (crank-slider mechanism) which creates a rotational torque. That torque is sent to the transmission before going to the wheels. At the top of the engine are valves that control the inlet and outlet of air, fuel, spark and exhaust. The valves are controlled by camshafts, which are linked to the crankshaft through a timing chain. This will keep the timing between the valves and piston in the combustion chamber consistent for efficient burning of the 4 stroke engine.

First the piston pulls in air and fuel as it moves downward, then it compresses that air and fuel as the piston moves upward. A spark plug fires, igniting the air/fuel mixture and forcing the piston downward. Finally the piston pushes out the exhaust gases on its way back up, before for the cycle repeats itself. In a V8 engine, this cycle is happening in 8 different cylinders, at different times. Instead of multiple cylinders firing at the same time, you want them to be spread out so that power delivery is smooth. For this Chevy V8, the firing or is 1, 8, 7, 2, 6, 5, 4, 3. With 8 cylinders, there is a cylinder firing for every 90 degrees of the crankshaft rotating, which means at any point in time, there are two cylinders on the power stroke. With regards to the valvetrain, the intake air comes from the top of the engine, and into the sides of the cylinder head. The exhaust flows to the sides of the engine, exiting the exhaust valves from the cylinder head. In this LS3 model, there is a single intake valve and a single exhaust valve, though it’s also common to see engines with two intake valves and two exhaust valves. The larger valve is the intake valve, and the smaller valve is the exhaust valve. The pushrod valvetrain gets its name from the metal pushrods which activate the rocker arms which open up the valves. The camshaft, located in the center of the V, has lobes on it which push the push rods up, opening the appropriate valves. For a full explanation of V8 engines, check out the video! C. Engine, an acronym for an internal combustion engine, is the engine in which ignition and combustion of fuel take place inside the engine. It works on the principle that the charge is ignited inside a combustion chamber under very high pressure. The term internal combustion engine usually refers to an engine in which combustion is intermittent, such as the more familiar two-stroke and four-stroke piston engines, along with variants, such as the six-stroke piston engine and the Wankel rotary engine. Four Stroke Engine: The petrol engine works on the principle of the otto cycle, also known as the constant volume cycle. The spark plug fitted at the top of the cover initiates the ignition of the petrol. In a four-stroke engine, all the events, i.e., suction, compression, power, and exhaust, are completed in two revolutions of the crankshaft. Four-Stroke Diesel Engine: The basic construction of a four-stroke diesel engine is the same as that of four stroke petrol engine, except instead of the spark plug, a fuel injector is mounted in its place. A fuel pump supplies the fuel oil to the injector at higher pressure. It works on the diesel cycle or constant pressure cycle. Two-stroke Petrol Engine: The two-stroke engine requires one revolution of the crankshaft or two piston strokes to complete the cycle of events (i.e., suction, compression, power, and exhaust). The two-stroke petrol engines also work on the principle of working of the otto cycle. Two-Stroke Cycle Diesel Engine: The Two-stroke Diesel engine works like the Petrol engine, but it injects diesel at the end of the compression stroke. In this simple video we will explain all the steps involved in this process, from the ignition to the operation of the internal combustion engine. When you get on your car the first thing you do, after putting the seat belts on, is to insert the key in the ignition switch to start the engine. When the switch is turned on, the electric circuit between the battery and the starter motor is closed. The starter motor is an important element for the starting system. It allows the engine to reach the proper rpm so as to initiate the engine's operation under its own power. The starter motor essentially transforms the electrical energy into mechanical energy. The starter motor is coupled to the FLYWHEEL, which in turn provides to transmit the motion to the CRANKSHAFT. Now the combustion cycle takes place inside the engine cylinders, so the starter motor is disconnected. Now let's see what happens inside the engine, taking the example of a common 4-STROKE ENGINE. A four-stroke engine is an internal combustion engine widely used in cars. It represents an example of efficiency and perfect synchronization. It converts the explosions that occur inside its combustion chambers into motion. The 4-stroke engine in fact gains its energy from heat released during the combustion of the air and fuel mixture inside its cylinders. The aim of this engine is to use this energy to provide movement and transfer it to the wheels, so that the vehicle can move. This process requires only 4 simple steps: It all takes place inside the cylinder. Here we can find the combustion chamber where the explosions occur. The cylinder is basically the space through which the piston travels. The purpose of the piston is to transfer force from expanding gas in the cylinder to the crankshaft via a piston rod or a connecting rod, so that the back-and-forth linear motion of the pistons is transformed into a circular motion which can power the wheels. But let's see this process more in detail by disassembling the engine. 02.34 This process requires only 4 simple steps: It all takes place inside the cylinder. Here we can find the combustion chamber where the explosions occur. The cylinder is basically the space through which the piston travels. The purpose of the piston is to transfer force from expanding gas in the cylinder to the crankshaft The term “four-stroke” is reffered to the cycle of engine operation which requires 4 strokes of the piston: First stroke: INTAKE: The valve must be in the open position while the piston pulls an air-fuel mixture into the cylinder by producing vacuum pressure through its downward motion. The air and fuel were previously mixed together by the injectors. The air-fuel ratio is generally about 14.7 to 1. That’s becouse fuel cannot ignite alone. It is the oxygen in the air in fact that provides the combustion of the fuel. What happens now that the air-fuel mixture is iniside the cylinder? Second stroke: COMPRESSION: During this stage both the intake and exhaust valves are closed, and the piston moves up the chamber to the top. This cause the compression of the fuel-air mixture which decreases 10 times its volume. At this point pressure rises drastically as the air and fuel molecules are compressed together colliding with eachother and increasing the temperature. Now we are ready for the explosion! Third stroke: COMBUSTION and EXPANSION: At the top of the compression stroke, the SPARK PLUG fires, igniting the compressed air-fuel mixture. This causes an explosion! As the fuel burns it expands, increasing the pressure inside the cylinder and driving the piston downward moving the twist that rotates the crankshaft, which will convert the energy of the explosion into rotary motion. Now, let’s see the fourth and final stroke, which is called: EXHAUST. During the exhaust stroke, the piston, once again, returns to the top while the exhaust valve is open. This action expels the spent air-fuel mixture through the exhaust valve. The 4-stroke cycle is complete but it does not stop here. At a speed of 6000 rpm it repeats up to 50 times per second, causing 200 explosions per second inside each cylinder of this 4-stroke engine. Types of V-engines Explained A V engine is a common configuration for IC engines. It consists of two cylinder banks with an equal number of cylinders in each bank usually connected by a common crankshaft. These cylinder banks are arranged at an angle to each other so that they can form a "V" shape when it is viewed from the front of the engine. V engines typically have a shorter length than equivalent inline engines. V6, V8, and V12 engines are the most common layout for car engines with six, eight, or twelve cylinders respectively. The first V engine, a two-cylinder V-twin, was designed by Wilhelm Maybach and used in the 1889 Daimler Stahlradwagen automobile. Compared with an inline engine, a V engine has a shorter length but is wider. This effect increases with the number of cylinders in the engine the length difference between a V-twin and straight-twin engines might be insignificant, however, V8 engines have a significantly smaller length than straight engines. Compared with the less common flat engine, a V engine is narrower, taller, and has a higher center of mass. A four-stroke engine (also known as four cycle) is an internal combustion (IC) engine in which the piston completes four separate strokes while turning a crankshaft. A stroke refers to the full travel of the piston along the cylinder, in either direction. The four separate strokes are termed: 1. Intake: also known as induction or suction This stroke of the piston begins at top dead center (T.D.C.) and ends at bottom dead center (B.D.C.). In this stroke the intake valve must be in the open position while the piston pulls an air-fuel mixture into the cylinder by producing vacuum pressure into the cylinder through its downward motion. 2. Compression: This stroke begins at B.D.C, or just at the end of the suction stroke, and ends at T.D.C. In this stroke the piston compresses the air-fuel mixture in preparation for ignition during the power stroke (below). Both the intake and exhaust valves are closed during this stage. 3. Combustion: also known as power or ignition This is the start of the second revolution of the four stroke cycle. At this point the crankshaft has completed a full 360 degree revolution. While the piston is at T.D.C. (the end of the compression stroke) the compressed air-fuel mixture is ignited by a spark plug (in a gasoline engine) or by heat generated by high compression (diesel engines), forcefully returning the piston to B.D.C. This stroke produces mechanical work from the engine to turn the crankshaft. 4. Exhaust: also known as outlet. During the exhaust stroke, the piston once again returns from B.D.C. to T.D.C. while the exhaust valve is open. This action expels the spent air-fuel mixture through the exhaust valve.
