Moscow has been targeted with a large-scale drone attack for the first time in its 15-month war in Ukraine, marking a new inflection point in a conflict the Kremlin said would never threaten the lives of ordinary Russians. Subscribe to Guardian News on YouTube ► 🤍 Video posted on social media early on Tuesday showed a drone flying over houses in the city’s Rublyovka district or flats in south-west neighbourhoods. The Russian defence ministry said eight drones targeted the city overnight but Russian media close to the security services wrote that the number was many times higher. Ukrainian authorities evacuated residents of a high-rise residential building in Kyiv in the early hours of Tuesday, after it sustained damage in the latest Russian drone attack on the Ukrainian capital. Falling debris sparked a fire in the building, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. He added that at least one person was killed due to the fire in the district. Twenty people were evacuated, with an elderly woman hospitalized, Klitschko added. "Massive attack! Stay indoors!" the mayor said. Kyiv's military administration said air defense forces destroyed over 29 out of 31 drones in the attacks. Serhiy Popko, the head of Kyiv's military administration, said the attack was conducted using Iranian-made Shahed drones alone. Falling debris sparked fires also in the capital's southern Darnytskyi district and central Pechersky district, the mayor said. Russia had fired a barrage of missiles at the Ukrainian capital on Monday in an unusual daytime attack. Russian forces often attack Kyiv overnight. The war Putin unleashed on neighboring Ukraine moved a whole lot closer to home. The Kremlin is accusing Kyiv of launching a large-scale drone attack on Moscow. Several buildings were damaged, but nobody died. But the strike has sowed uncertainty and fear in the Russian capital. The defense ministry there says it shot down five unmanned aerial vehicles and diverted three others electronically. Although Kyiv denies any direct involvement in the attacks, officials there expressed satisfaction with Russia getting a taste of its own medicine. Reacting to the news that Moscow had been hit by drones, the Russian president said it was an example of terrorism by Ukraine: "As you know, the Kyiv regime has chosen a different path: the path of attempts to intimidate Russia, Russian citizens and attacks on residential buildings. This is, of course, a clear sign of terrorist activities. First, I want to say that the Moscow air defence system worked in the regular way, although there are things for us to work on." How exposed is Russia to attacks and how tenable is the apathetic status quo in the face of the war moving closer to home? Russia's Defence Ministry says it has prevented an attempted cross-border incursion from Ukraine into the Russian region of Belgorod - and reported renewed shelling of the area from Ukraine. The Kremlin says Soviet-designed rockets were used in the attacks. The regional governor says at least eight people were injured during what he called 'uninterrupted shelling' of the town of Shebekino. Two more were hurt when a drone crashed. Residents have been moved to temporary shelters. For more on this we talk to DW's Russia analyst Konstantin Eggert who joins us from Vilnius. It’s not a secret that the weapons have neutralized Russian combat effectiveness. Russia is desperate to get these weapons out of Ukraine. Their current attempt at doing this is by using online troll farms to promote isolationism in the US. But Russian State TV seems to believe that killing Americans will ultimately turn opinion against helping Ukraine. This is a totally rational line of thinking because if you remember, after 9/11 - the United States said “oh shucks”, and didn’t respond at all. They didn’t conduct counter-terrorism operations in 85 countries, recklessly overthrow a dictator because they wanted to, and in the process destabilize an entire region of the world.
