Do you have struggles reading and using an electrical wiring diagram? If yes, don't worry! By end of this video, you'll have a good understanding of how to read, understand, and use any wiring diagram for your benefit. An electrical wiring diagram could be a single-page schematic of how a ceiling fan should be connected to the power source and its remote switches so that we can turn it on and off. A wiring diagram may include the wiring of a vehicle. For example, how the horns are powered and connected to the controller on your steering wheel. Or an electrical wiring diagram can be a 200-page document including all the electrical wirings of an electrical control panel in a huge factory or plant. Wiring diagrams may follow different standards depending on the country they are going to be used. They may have different layouts depending on the company and the designer who is designing that. They also may be drawn by different ECAD software such as EPLAN or AutoCAD electrical. So, when you see a wiring diagram for the first time, you may need some time to analyze it and become familiar with its layout and symbols. As we’ve said before, this is a control panel that is used for a system that turns wastewater into clean water. It is a 2-door control panel on the front of which we have some switches that are connected to the PLC inputs and outputs. We are going to look at these switches and try and figure out the wiring behind them, as you may be curious as to how these switches are wired to the PLC! Let us first identify our push buttons; we have the Mute Buzzer push button, the ESD Reset push button and the Emergency Stop push button. Try to remember them, and see if we can find any of these items in the electrical drawings. All the wiring that you see in the panel is done based on the wiring diagram. This is what we draw using AutoCAD. Each page of this wiring diagram shows the exact wiring for different sections of this control panel. In the back of the Emergency Stop push button, you see that we have four wires, just as what we have on the wiring diagram. Two wires are tagged as 1 and two wires are tagged as 2. Based on the diagram, one of these wires with the tag 2 goes to the PLC digital input. It says the tag for the PLC input that the push button is connected to is 300U2.1. These are the tags for the PLC inputs and outputs. One end of this diagram is connected to the push button and the other end is connected to the PLC input. So this is how easy it is to read the wiring diagram for a control panel. It goes exactly the same for the other switches that we have here as well. So to sum it all up, here is what you are going to learn after watching this video: – All the wiring that you see in the panel is done based on the wiring diagram. This is what we draw using AutoCAD Electrical. – Each page of the wiring diagram shows the exact wiring for different sections of the control panel. – Each of the wires in the wiring diagram has a tag number. This video provides an overview of how to read AC schematics. We walk through some of the basics and most common symbols associated with reading air conditioner wiring diagrams. Whenever you approach a wiring diagram, look at the whole thing, especially the legend and notes. In many cases, factory wiring will show up as solid lines and field wiring will show up as dashed lines. (Power wiring may be darker or bolder, and control wiring may be lighter.) In other words, solid lines indicate wires that are inside the appliance, and dashed lines indicate connections that you will have to make in the field. Component connections may be circular, and field splices may look a bit like wire nuts (and indicate where YOU will need to make a connection). The legend also contains nomenclature to help you understand what the abbreviations really mean. In the case of this relatively universal Carrier wiring diagram, the asterisks by the abbreviations indicate that those respective parts may be factory-installed but may also be something that you'll have to add. Schematics (ladder diagrams) differ from connection diagrams in that everything is shown between the two legs of power (L1 and L2). Schematics also have an inverted pyramid to indicate ground. The contactor's contacts are shown on separate sides on the schematics, but everything inside the contactor is shown together on the connection diagram. That's because the connection diagram shows how the components look within the unit instead of how power gets from one place to another. However, the components and connection points have the same names and numbers across both diagrams. You can differentiate switch types based on what's beneath them. Thermal switches have squiggles, pressure switches have a bell, and float switches have a circle. Normally closed switches will appear closed on the diagrams, and normally open switches will appear open on diagrams. Low-pressure switches will have the line beneath the right-hand circle, and high-pressure switches will have the line above the right-hand circle. (In this case, the schematic had a typo.) Upside-down Y symbols on switches indicate a time delay. One thing worth noting is that the letter C represents a common point; it does NOT mean the same thing on a run capacitor as it does on the compressor. On the compressor, C refers to the common point between the start and run windings. On the run capacitor, C refers to the common point between the compressor run capacitor and the condenser fan. A short straight line followed by a curved line represents a capacitor. Spring-like symbols indicate that you are looking at an inductive or magnetic winding (usually in motors). On the other hand, jagged symbols indicate resistive loads, which generate light or heat instead of magnetism. How to read a schematic, follow electronics circuit drawings to make actual circuits from them. This starts with the schematic for a very simple circuit with just some batteries, resistor, switch and an LED. Then it talks about Earth ground and chassis ground. ✅ C'mon over to 🤍 where you can learn PLC programming faster and easier than you ever thought possible! = ✅ Check out the full blog post over at 🤍 = In this video, you will learn how to convert a basic wiring diagram to a ladder logic PLC program. This can be a very handy skill to learn, especially if you are converting a machine to PLC control. Upgrading a machine to PLC control may seem like a daunting task. However, if you take your time and learn the basics, it can be an easily achievable task. I will walk you through programming a very basic “stop-start” circuit for an electric motor. This should help you get a handle on some of the basics. First, let’s look at our basic start and stop diagram. I like to start on the left and follow the line. Each line represents a wire that is connected. L1 is our 120v hot wire. It will run straight to the normally closed Stop button labeled PB1. From the other terminal on PB1, it runs to a normally open PB2 which is our Start button. From the other terminal on PB2, a wire connects to the A1 terminal on the Motor Starter Coil. The A2 terminal runs to the normally closed overload auxiliary contact. The next wire runs from the other overload terminal to neutral. The next line down shows how a motor starter stays energized. One wire needs to be connected to the input terminal of the start push button. It will run to one terminal of the auxiliary contact set on the motor starter. This ensures power is on the auxiliary contact. The second terminal of the auxiliary contact is connected to the output side of the start push button. When the start button is pushed, the circuit is complete and the motor starter will energize. This closes the auxiliary contact and allows the operator to release the start button. The motor starter will now stay energized until the stop button is pressed and the circuit opens. Programming software is all different but similar. Most have a toolbox somewhere that you will drag your contacts and coils from. Just like on the diagram, we start with the stop pushbutton. It will be represented with an examine OFF bit. These look like a normally closed contact. Drag it to the first ladder rung and the program will place it to the far left. This will be a stop push button. Next, drag an examine ON bit and drop it to the right of the first bit. This looks like normally open contact and will be the start push button. And continue to complete your PLC programming logic according to this simple start-stop wiring diagram. To wrap it up, to program a simple motor start-stop circuit, we need to read the electrical diagram from left to right and open our toolbox on the programming software. You will be using the most common bits in the examine ON, examine OFF, and output coil or output energize. Again, the language is sometimes different between manufacturers, but the symbols pretty well look the same. The bits will represent normally open and normally closed inputs, and a single output. You will also need to use a branch around one bit. This is basically a parallel circuit and OR logic. The start push button OR the auxiliary contact will energize the circuit. To be successful in diagnosing any electrical concern, techs must be comfortable in three areas; electrical fundamentals (volts, ohms and amps and how they all interact as well as how a fundamental circuit operates), using electrical testing equipment (the basic functions of a Digital Multimeter is a start) and how to “read” a wiring diagram. This month, we’re going to focus on the last. Reading a wiring diagram has often been compared to reading a street map. You have to follow the “roads” from one component to the next to see how everything is connected. And that is true – to a point. It is even more important to use the diagram to understand what is happening in those wires and components as well as when it’s happening. For example, if the blue/white wire starts at a fuse and ends up at a relay, is that wire carrying power all the time or only when the key is turned on? Does that wire supply power to the control side of the relay or the component side? What causes the power to switch on or off – a manual switch request or is it a control module driven control? Truly “reading” a wiring diagram will help you in your troubleshooting. Often, with this knowledge, you can isolate a very narrow section of the wiring to focus your actual testing on.
