The pons is one of the major divisions of the brainstem. It contains a large number of tracts and nuclei. In this video, I highlight some of the more notable of these. For an article (on my website) that explains the pons, click this link: 🤍 TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to 2 minute neuroscience, where I explain neuroscience topics in 2 minutes or less. In this installment I will discuss the pons. The pons is a major division of the brainstem. It is found above the medulla and below the midbrain. Pons is Latin for bridge, and it was so named because the anterior part of the pons, which is known as the basal or basilar pons, causes the pons to look like a bridge that connects the two hemispheres of the cerebellum. The region behind the basal pons is called the pontine tegmentum or dorsal pons. The pons contains many tracts and nuclei. This video will highlight just some of the more notable of these. The basal pons doesn’t form a direct connection between the cerebellar hemispheres, but the pons is attached to the cerebellum by the middle cerebellar peduncles, a major pathway between the brainstem and cerebellum. The inferior cerebellar peduncles also travel through the pons to carry information to the cerebellum, and the superior cerebellar peduncles enter the brainstem at the level of the pons and carry information from the cerebellum to the brainstem. The pons forms most of the floor of the fourth ventricle, and is home to several cranial nerve nuclei, including the trigeminal nuclei, which are involved with sensory and motor functions of the head and face, the abducens nucleus, which controls lateral movements of the eye, the facial motor nucleus, which controls muscles of facial expression, and the vestibular nuclei, which process vestibular information. The pons also contains the locus coeruleus, the largest collection of norepinephrine-containing neurons in the brain, and some of the raphe nuclei, the major serotonin-producing neurons of the brain. The pons also serves as a conduit for many tracts passing up and down through the brainstem, like the corticospinal tract for voluntary movement, medial lemniscus for tactile and proprioceptive sensations, and spinothalamic tract for pain and temperature sensations. #pons #neuroanatomy #brainstem donation link : 🤍 my instagram: 🤍 A cross section at any level of pons shows two distinct regions: A large ventral or basilar part. A small dorsal or tegmental part. On the midline of the anterior surface of the pons is a sulcus which houses the basilar artery. The ventral or basilar part is continuous inferiorly with the pyramids of the medulla and on each side with the middle cerebellar peduncle. The structure of basilar part is the same at all levels of pons. The dorsal or tegmental part is a direct upward continuation of the medulla excluding the pyramids. The structure of tegmental part varies considerably in the upper and lower parts of the pons.

Anatomy of pons شرح-The pons is the middle part of the brain stem. Its ventral (basilar) part bulges anteriorly. The pons is divided in to two parts: a) Ventral part = called basis pontis. b) Dorsal part = called tegmentum A- Ventral (Basilar) surface: shows: i. Basilar groove: A shallow median groove which lodges the basilar artery. ii. Transverse pontine fibres: they are thick ridges which collect on either side to form middle cerebellar peduncle (MCP), connecting pons to cerebellum iii. Exit of the middle four cranial nerves: • Trigeminal nerve (V): consists of large sensory (lateral) and small motor (medial) roots and emerge from the lateral part of the front of pons close to its upper border • Abducent nerve (VI): exits from the sulcus between pyramid and pons. • Facial (VII) and Vestibulo-cochlear (VIII) nerves: exit from the cerebellopontine angle. N.B: On either side of the lower part of the pons, there is a region called the cerebellopontine angle. The facial, vestibulocochlear, and glossopharyngeal nerves, and the labyrinthine arteries lie in this region B- Dorsal (Tegmental) surface: - It is separated from the back of open medulla by medullary stria. - Forms upper part of the floor of the 4th ventricle - It presents: i. Medial eminence and facial coilliculus which is present at the lower end of the medial eminence and is produced by the abducent nucleus and the encircling facial nerve fibers. ii. Sulcus limitans is lateral to medial eminence. iii. Vestibular area: overlies superior vestibular nuclei. Blood supply of pons a) The basilar artery. b) Superior cerebellar artery. c) Anterior inferior cerebellar artery. Internal structure of the pons In a transverse section, the pons is divided into 2 parts: ventral or basilar part and dorsal or tegmental part. The 2 parts differ from each other in their contents 1. Basilar part: It bulges forwards and contains pontine nuclei (nuclei pontis) as well as longitudinal and transverse fibres. 2. Tegmental part.
